How English numbers work
Learn the units (one to nine), the irregular teens (eleven, twelve, thirteen...), the tens (twenty, thirty, forty...) and then combine: 21 is twenty-one, with a hyphen; 247 is two hundred forty-seven. American English skips "and" in the middle, British English keeps it (two hundred and fifty). Both are fine. For full dates, try our date in English tool.
Frequently asked
One thousand. Note that English uses a comma as the thousands separator (1,000) and a period for decimals.
Cardinals count quantity: one, two, three. Ordinals mark position: first, second, third. Dates use ordinals, which is why you say July twentieth.
In compound numbers from 21 to 99: twenty-one, forty-seven, ninety-nine. There is no hyphen between hundreds or thousands blocks.
