The date trap in English
The biggest date mistake is not vocabulary, it is order. In the US the month comes first: 07/20 is July 20th. In the UK the day comes first, like in most of the world. When in doubt, write the month out (July 20, 2026): it works everywhere and removes the ambiguity. For the ordinal words, try our numbers in words converter.
Frequently asked
The order. American format starts with the month (July 20, 2026 or 07/20/2026). British format starts with the day (20 July 2026 or 20/07/2026). That is why 03/04 can be March 4th in the US and April 3rd in the UK.
English says days as ordinals: July twentieth. In formal writing the plain number is common (July 20), but in speech the ordinal is nearly mandatory.
